“Flora, Fauna and Flesh consist of a series of figurative canvases and still life drawings. These works celebrate the Proustian Moment, i.e. a vivid recollection of past events through sensory stimulation.
Still life is the tradition of painting inanimate objects that delight the eye. The portrayal of everyday objects in this case, products of the mid century which we may fail to notice, conjure up the unconscious memory of a unique experience, time and place.
The figures in this series recall iconographic paintings in western art, recreated in my own 21st century language.. .These quote works such as Ingres’ “Grand Odilesque” and DaVinci’s “La Belle Ferroniere,” while including mirrors as a nonverbal signature in much the same way as Van Eyke’s “Arnolfini Marriage.”
